DESCRIPTION:
Compass- early English pocket sundial and compass with folding circular sundial index supported by a crescent index marked in degrees and folding gnomon. The outer case is finely engraved with latitude markings for different international cities including Shanghai, Peking and Canterbury for calibrating the sundial. The diameter is 49mm, circa mid to late 18th century
CONDITION:
a similar compass (slightly earlier) sold for over $2200 in Pieces of Time catalog #70. It is in good condition overall with little tarnishing.
